North Cascades Elopement Adventure
The North Cascades are one of those places that never fail to take your breath away. With jagged peaks, alpine lakes, and sweeping trails, it feels like the perfect backdrop for couples who want to combine adventure with intimacy on their wedding day. Recently, I had the joy of photographing an elopement that started at Artist Point, continued with a ceremony at Picture Lake, and finished with a golden hour hike up Tabletop Mountain — and it was truly unforgettable.
Getting Ready at Artist Point
The day began at Artist Point, where the road ends and the mountains open up in every direction. The couple got ready in their van parked nearby, surrounded by crisp alpine air and panoramic views of Mount Shuksan and Mount Baker. Photographing the little details here felt so special — the dress swaying in the mountain breeze, vows written on notebook pages, and that nervous-excited laughter as they buttoned up and slipped on hiking boots for the day ahead.
A Ceremony at Picture Lake
For their ceremony, we drove just a few minutes down to Picture Lake, one of the most iconic spots in the North Cascades. The still water reflected Mount Shuksan perfectly, almost like nature’s own altar. Their vows were heartfelt and emotional, and as they spoke, a few curious hikers paused at a distance to smile and witness the moment. The couple shared their first kiss as husband and wife with the reflection of Shuksan behind them — a scene that honestly looked like it belonged on a postcard.
Hiking to Tabletop Mountain
After the ceremony, we laced up and set out for the Tabletop Mountain Trail, a short but steep hike that rewards you with one of the best panoramic views in the entire area. The couple held hands as they climbed, laughing through the switchbacks and stopping to take in the wildflowers and alpine views along the way. At the top, the mountains stretched endlessly in every direction, with Mount Baker glowing in the late afternoon light.
Sunset at the Summit
We reached the summit as the clouds were rolling in. One thing about the Mountains- they have their own weather up there - so we did not get a sunset, but still captured stunning views before the clouds and fog covered the sky. Before summiting down, the couple popped some champagne, then we did an impromtu trip back down to Picture lake where we pulled out some lanterns and took a few blue hour photos - making it a perfect ending for the night.
What I love about the North Cascades is how you can have it all in one day — a serene lakeside ceremony, adventurous hiking portraits, and a mountaintop sunset to end the evening. It’s a place that invites couples to slow down, embrace the adventure, and start their marriage in one of the most breathtaking landscapes in Washington.
